Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday urged political parties to set aside political differences and work together in the national interest.

Speaking at the All India Speakers’ Conference 2025, held at the Delhi Assembly to mark the centenary of Veer Vitthalbhai Patel’s election as the first Indian Speaker of a legislative body, Shah emphasised the importance of upholding the dignity of parliamentary institutions.

Addressing the gathering, Shah said the centenary of Patel’s election offered an opportunity to enhance the dignity and respect of the Speaker’s post.

He stressed that the Speaker must provide an impartial platform to represent citizens’ concerns and ensure parliamentary operations follow established rules.

Drawing from India’s history, Shah warned that assemblies had faced dire consequences whenever they lost their dignity.

Referring to examples from the Mahabharat, he noted that safeguarding the honour of legislative institutions remained crucial.

Home Minister Shah underlined India’s democratic resilience since Independence, pointing out that despite frequent regime changes, the country had avoided bloodshed. He contrasted this with several nations where democracy had collapsed amid violence and instability.

The Home Minister acknowledged that disruptions are a part of democracy but criticised the misuse of disruptions to stall parliamentary proceedings.

“Preventing the House from functioning for personal political gain is not a productive discussion,” Shah said. “While opposition is legitimate, stalling debates undermines Parliament’s role in contributing to national development.”

HM Shah urged lawmakers to engage in constructive debates instead of treating assemblies as ‘a room built of stones’. He asserted that meaningful discussions, not political theatrics, would strengthen India’s democracy.

Concluding his address, Shah appealed to both government and opposition members to rise above party politics.

“Rising above the party lines for the benefit of the nation will take us to the final level of the democratic heights,” he said.
