Union Home Minister Amit Shah will begin a two-day tour of Assam on Thursday, marking a politically significant visit in the lead-up to the 2026 Assembly elections.
During his visit, he will participate in high-level party meetings and will launch several development projects aimed at strengthening regional infrastructure.
Soon after his arrival in Guwahati, Shah will attend the BJP’s core committee meeting at the party’s state headquarters.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that the meeting will focus on preparing for the upcoming Assembly elections.
“The Home Minister will guide our strategy. He always takes a personal interest in state polls,” Sarma said.
Following the meeting, Shah will join party leaders for dinner, continuing his practice of close interaction with grassroots leadership.
Is Set to Inaugurate Key Projects
On Friday, Shah will inaugurate the newly constructed Brahmaputra wing of the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati.
In addition, he will carry out the e-inauguration of the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory, and will lay foundation stones for several development projects under the ITBP, SSB, and Assam Rifles.
These initiatives will focus on improving internal security infrastructure and enhancing regional connectivity.
Later that day, Shah will attend the Panchayat Sanmilan, a major convention of newly elected NDA panchayat representatives.
His presence is expected to boost the morale of local leaders and reinforce the party’s grassroots engagement ahead of the elections.
In the evening, HM Shah will inaugurate the birth centenary celebrations of Golap Borbora, Assam’s first non-Congress Chief Minister.
The event will honour Borbora’s contributions to Assam’s political evolution and governance.
Visit Extended, PM Modi’s Trip Rescheduled
HM Shah extended his visit to Assam from a single day on 29 August to two days in order to accommodate additional events and engagements.
At the same time, CM Sarma announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had rescheduled his visit to Assam for Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations to 13–14 September, owing to the Vice Presidential election on 9 September.
Despite the change in the Prime Minister’s schedule, organisers will still hold the commemorative event in Assam on 8 September as planned.
Amit Shah’s visit will energise the BJP’s state organisation and reinforce the central government’s focus on Assam’s development and political priorities.
