Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will visit Gujarat on Thursday for a packed schedule covering sports, education, pharmaceuticals, local development and public engagement.
Shah will chair a review meeting on preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. He will assess plans for the proposed 2036 Olympic Games at the Circuit House Annexe in Ahmedabad’s Shahibaug.
Ahmedabad will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, while India has bid for the 2036 Olympics with the city as its proposed centre.
Shah previously reviewed the preparations with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. He assessed the plans with Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and senior officials.
The review will examine expanding sports infrastructure, including the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera and the developing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave.
The Union government said India secured the right to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games after assessing infrastructure, participation and facilities across more than 70 countries.
The assessment covered the sporting infrastructure and facilities available in each country.
Shah earlier said Ahmedabad would host the 2029 World Police and Fire Games and could secure the 2036 Olympics.
The Olympic Games have not yet been awarded to Ahmedabad.
Shah will begin his Gujarat visit in Amreli by inaugurating the newly constructed ‘Het Ni Haveli’ lake at Panchganga Tirth in Dudhala. The Harikrishna Foundation built the lake. He will then attend Gujarat Vidyapith’s 72nd convocation in Ahmedabad.
The institution was founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. Gujarat Governor and Chancellor Acharya Devvrat will deliver the address.
Around 900 students from 18 departments and seven faculties will receive degrees. The cohort includes 184 undergraduates, 400 postgraduates, 232 postgraduate programme students, 21 postgraduate diploma holders and 63 MPhil or PhD scholars.
Women account for 441 graduates and men 459. Around 559 students will attend.
Twelve students will receive Mandir and Dhwaj medals for their achievements.
The honours recognise academic excellence, research, innovation, community service, leadership, sports and commitment to Gandhian values.
Shah will later attend the RV Patel Pharminnova Awards-2026 at 05:30 PM. He will conclude the day with a 6:15 pm ‘Lok Darbar’ at BKM School in Bopal.
