Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Tripura on June 4 and 5 to review security arrangements along the India-Bangladesh border and assess efforts to curb illegal infiltration, smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
After attending the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Meghalaya, Shah will arrive in Agartala and hold high-level meetings with officials from the Border Security Force (BSF) and other security agencies. He will also visit key border locations in the West Tripura district to assess the situation on the ground and review security measures.
During the two-day visit, Shah will lay foundation stones for infrastructure projects, participate in a tree plantation drive and attend a Sainik Sammelan. He will also take part in the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for a hotel project being jointly developed by the Tripura government and a private organisation.
Authorities have intensified preparations for the visit. Tripura shares an 856-km border with Bangladesh and remains vulnerable to illegal migration, smuggling and other transnational crimes.
Except for about 21 km of difficult terrain, authorities have fenced most of the border to strengthen security.
BSF officials said they have significantly enhanced surveillance and border domination measures since political unrest erupted in Bangladesh in 2024.
Last month, Shah announced the government’s Smart Border Project, which will strengthen border security through drones, radars, advanced surveillance cameras and other modern technologies. He also stressed the importance of coordination between the BSF and state governments.
The Home Minister urged BSF units in Tripura, Assam and West Bengal to work closely with local administrations, police and other authorities to prevent infiltration and improve border management along India’s eastern frontier.
