Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Delhi on Wednesday to address the controversy surrounding his recent remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Shah accused the Congress party of distorting his speech in the Rajya Sabha for political gain and claimed the party is “anti-Ambedkar,” “anti-reservation,” and “anti-Constitution.”
Shah emphasized that Congress misquoted his remarks on Ambedkar during the Constitution Day debate. He called the Congress party out for spreading false narratives, reminding the media of similar instances during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Home Minister stated that the BJP never insults national icons, especially Ambedkar, whom he regards as a hero and architect of the Indian Constitution.
“I came from a party with such values that I will never insult or speak ill of Babasaheb, even in my dreams,” Shah asserted, clarifying his stance on the Dalit icon.
Shah accused the Congress party of a history of disrespecting Ambedkar and manipulating public opinion for political advantage. He referred to the Congress’ attempts to undermine Ambedkar during the 1950s, including efforts to prevent his victory in elections. He also criticized the delay in awarding Ambedkar the Bharat Ratna, pointing out that the Dalit leader was only honored with the nation’s highest civilian award after Congress lost power.
Shah also attacked Congress for denying Dalits basic rights and questioned their reluctance to support quotas for the poor and underprivileged. He reminded Congress of their track record of disrespecting democracy and the Constitution.
Shah concluded his remarks by urging Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge to stop spreading false narratives and advised the media to expose these misleading claims to the public.
In the Rajya Sabha, Shah remarked, “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar repeatedly. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have secured heaven for seven lifetimes.” Congress leaders claimed this showed BJP and RSS disdain for Ambedkar and accused Shah of undermining Dalits.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP, alleging its allegiance to Manusmriti opposed Ambedkar’s vision. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh shared a video clip of Shah’s statement, further fueling criticism.
While concluding the two-day debate on the Constitution’s journey, Shah accused Congress of treating the Constitution as its “private fiefdom.” He alleged the Congress played fraud with Parliament and pursued appeasement politics.
Shah asserted that BJP respects the Constitution and has worked for backward classes. He defended implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand, promising its rollout nationwide. Shah also accused Congress of breaching the 50% quota limit for Muslim reservations and failing to serve backward communities.
The controversy highlights growing political tensions over Ambedkar’s legacy and BJP’s policy approach.
