Today marks the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India, an event BJP is commemorating as a black day. Several BJP leaders have launched scathing attacks on Congress and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Home Minister Amit Shah took to social media, sharing a post where he accused Congress of repeatedly subverting the Constitution to perpetuate the power of a specific family.
Amit Shah’s post highlighted the severe atrocities committed by the Indira Gandhi regime during the Emergency period. He criticized Rahul Gandhi, referring to him as the ‘Yuvraj’ of Congress, for seemingly forgetting his family’s role in the dark chapter of Indian democracy. Shah quoted Rajiv Gandhi’s infamous 1985 statement in the Lok Sabha defending Emergency, implying Congress’s willingness to endorse dictatorial actions in pursuit of power and dynastic interests.

In another post, Shah accused Congress of a long history of undermining democracy in India, citing the 1975 Emergency as the most glaring example. He condemned the Congress government’s autocratic measures during the 21-month period, including media censorship, constitutional amendments, and curbing judicial independence. Shah praised the resilience of countless protesters, including Satyagrahis, social workers, farmers, youth, and women, who bravely resisted the Emergency’s suppression of civil liberties.
On June 25, 1975, Indira Gandhi’s declaration of Emergency ushered in a period marked by authoritarian rule, an anniversary now designated by BJP as a solemn occasion to remember and denounce the erosion of democratic values in India’s history.
