Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Lok Sabha on Monday. He stated that the government is moving steadily towards eliminating Left-Wing Extremism by March 31, 2026, in line with the target set by PM Narendra Modi.
He presented details during a debate on “Naxal-Free India”, highlighting the scale of recent operations.
Shah underlined the impact of security measures, stating that “706 Maoists have been neutralised, 2,218 arrested, and 4,839 have surrendered” in recent years. He noted that these outcomes reflect sustained pressure on extremist groups.
The Home Minister criticised those spreading what he described as a false narrative among tribal communities. He remarked, “They claim they are fighting for the rights and justice of tribals, but in reality, they are spreading their violent ideology and have no faith in democracy or development.”
Referring to Bastar, Shah said the region has undergone a visible transformation from its earlier status as a Maoist stronghold.
He stated, “Today, Naxalism is almost finished in Bastar (Chhattisgarh). Schools and ration shops are being opened in every village, 5 kg foodgrains are being distributed regularly, Aadhaar cards are being made, and basic facilities are reaching the people.”
Questions Previous Governance
HM Shah raised concerns about the lack of development in the region over the previous decades. He questioned why such benefits had not reached residents earlier.
He said, “After 2014, when PM Modi came to power, every poor person got a house, gas connection, drinking water, insurance cover and foodgrains. Why were the people of Bastar deprived? It was because of red terror.”
Reiterating the government’s position, Shah warned against armed rebellion and stated, “Anyone who picks up the gun will have to pay the price.” He also appealed to remaining Maoists to give up violence and join the mainstream, assuring them of rehabilitation support.
The parliamentary discussion comes just ahead of the March 31, 2026, deadline set to eliminate Left-Wing Extremism. Shah emphasised that the government will continue combining strict security action with rapid development to achieve this goal.
The government remains focused on addressing both security and developmental challenges in affected regions.
Officials believe that this dual approach will help bring lasting peace. They also expect it to improve the lives of people in areas once impacted by extremism.
