On Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata to supervise the process of choosing the BJP Legislative Party leader in West Bengal, who will subsequently take oath as the state’s next Chief Minister.
Senior BJP leaders, including state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and Suvendu Adhikari, received Shah at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport after he landed around 11 AM.
After arriving in the city, the Union Home Minister visited the famous Kali temple in the North 24 Parganas district and offered prayers.
Shah later proceeded to a hotel in New Town before heading to the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, where the BJP’s newly elected MLAs will likely meet.
During the Legislative Party meeting, the BJP will formally elect its leader in the Assembly. The chosen leader will become the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal since Independence, following the party’s sweeping victory in the Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on May 4.
Following the selection, the new BJP Legislative Party leader is likely to visit the Lok Bhavan in Kolkata to stake a claim to form the government before Governor RN Ravi.
According to the BJP’s schedule, Shah will remain in Kolkata overnight and attend the swearing-in ceremony on Saturday at Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several BJP chief ministers and senior party leaders from across the country, will likely attend the oath-taking ceremony.
Security arrangements tightened across the Brigade Parade Ground area ahead of the programme, which will likely begin at 10 AM on Saturday.
