Amit Shah Oversees Rajasthan-Haryana Yamuna Water Agreement

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday oversaw the signing of an agreement between Rajasthan and Haryana for the Yamuna Water Project, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mantra of ‘Solution through Dialogue’ for helping resolve the long-pending issue.

Shah said the agreement addresses a nearly three-decade-old water-related problem faced by the people of both states. He described it as an example of cooperative federalism, stating that long-standing disputes can be resolved when states work together through dialogue.

According to an official statement, the project will enable Rajasthan to receive its allocated share of Yamuna waters through an underground pipeline system connected to the Western Yamuna Canal.

The arrangement is in line with the 1994 Memorandum of Understanding on sharing the utilisable surface waters of the Upper Yamuna Basin.

The project will likely benefit millions by ensuring a reliable drinking water supply and supporting socio-economic development in Rajasthan’s arid and semi-arid regions. It also establishes a framework for coordinated implementation by the Centre and the two state governments.

Shah said three underground pipelines will supply approximately 580 Million Cubic Meters (MCM) of water from the Yamuna Canal to Rajasthan between July and October.

Each pipeline will have a diameter of more than 3.6 metres and will provide drinking water to people in both Rajasthan and Haryana.

The Minister described the pact as a ‘Win-Win Situation’ for both states, adding that it comprehensively addresses financial responsibilities, cost-sharing, water allocation, release protocols, maintenance, monitoring, transparency and dispute resolution.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Paatil and senior officials attended the signing ceremony.
