Amit Shah Opens India’s First Cooperative Biogas Plant; Showcases Farmer-Focused Reforms

On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the nation’s first cooperative compressed biogas plant in Kopargaon, Maharashtra. He emphasised the Modi government’s commitment to empowering farmers.

The new facility represents a key step in advancing green energy production while strengthening India’s cooperative sector.

Describing the event as ‘a proud moment for the country’, Shah noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision has reshaped the cooperative movement into a major driver of rural economic progress.

“By establishing the cooperative sector, PM Modi initiated a new lifeline for the country’s rural economy. The cooperative sector is emerging as a strong pillar of India’s development,” he remarked.

Shah further announced that the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) will support 15 cooperative sugar mills across India to set up similar biogas plants.

The move aims to boost sustainable rural industries and generate new economic opportunities.

Underscoring the government’s farmer-oriented approach, Shah referred to the launch of the ‘Dalhan Atmanirbharta Project’ on 1 October. The Rs 11,340 crore initiative aims to make India self-reliant in pulse production.

“The Narendra Modi government is dedicated towards the country’s farmers. Under this project, farmers cultivating pigeon pea, black gram pea, and red lentils will be able to sell their produce at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) through NAFED and NCCF. The government will procure 100 per cent of these pulses,” the Union Home Minister stated.

He further added that officials will set up 1,000 processing units nationwide and distribute 38 lakh high-quality seed kits to farmers to support the initiative.

The government has also recently raised MSPs:

  • Masoor by Rs 300 per quintal,
  • Mustard by Rs 250, and
  • Chana by Rs 225

This move further reinforces its support for the agricultural sector.

Reaffirming the Prime Minister’s focus on environmental responsibility, Shah encouraged citizens to take part in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign by planting two trees, one for Mother Earth and another in their own mother’s name, as a step towards combating climate change.

“Prime Minister Modi has taken India’s economy from 11th to fourth position globally. To become number one, there is no alternative to ‘Swadeshi’,” he concluded.
