Amit Shah Lauds Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Anti-Drug Drive In Assam

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday praised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam Police for their crackdown on drug trafficking, which has led to 945 arrests, 547 cases and narcotics seizures worth over Rs 182 crore.

In a post on X, Amit Shah described the action as ‘a decisive blow to drug networks’ and congratulated the state government and police for their sustained efforts under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

Figures updated until October 13 show that authorities raided 703 drug hotspots, while properties worth nearly Rs 31 crore are under attachment proceedings.

Police executed 73 non-bailable warrants and apprehended 47 absconders, including 10 from other states.

Proposals under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act have been initiated against 157 people, with the cases still under process.

The campaign has targeted tobacco violations. Authorities conducted 2,229 raids under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), inspected 3,662 establishments and issued 2,844 challans.

Officials surveyed 2,943 educational institutions to identify tobacco-, drug- and alcohol-free zones. A total of 633 awareness programmes reached 1,12,532 citizens and students.

The drive resulted in the seizure or destruction of 1,34,539 litres of illicit liquor, including Indian-made foreign liquor and other illegal liquor.

Amit Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Nasha Mukt Bharat vision, reinforced by the Vision Document on Narcotics Control 2026-29, reflects the government’s commitment to dismantling drug networks, targeting their financial resources and protecting young people. He added that the campaign against drugs would continue with determination.
