On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam, marking a significant advancement in law enforcement infrastructure in the northeastern region.
The academy, named after the legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, is set to provide comprehensive training to police personnel while celebrating the warrior’s rich legacy.
Honoring Lachit Barphukan’s Legacy
During the inauguration ceremony, Shah praised the courage and leadership of Lachit Barphukan, particularly his pivotal role in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where he led the Ahom forces to a historic victory against the Mughal army.

Shah emphasized that the academy’s name symbolizes courage, dedication, and selfless service, values that the police personnel will be expected to uphold.
“Lachit Barphukan’s bravery is a source of inspiration for all Indians. By dedicating this police academy to his name, we ensure that future generations of police personnel imbibe his values of patriotism and integrity,” said Shah, addressing the gathering.
State-of-the-Art Facilities To Enhance Training
The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy boasts modern facilities designed to provide advanced training to law enforcement officers.
The academy includes state-of-the-art classrooms for theoretical learning, as well as simulated environments to allow practical training in real-world law enforcement scenarios.
In addition to academic and tactical training, the academy features physical fitness and combat training zones to improve agility and endurance.
It also includes specialized cybercrime and forensic laboratories, equipping officers with the necessary tools to tackle contemporary criminal activities.
“The academy expect to train hundreds of police personnel annually, strengthening Assam’s security framework and fostering better law enforcement practices across the region,” Union Minister Shah added.
A Collaborative Effort For Assam’s Development
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who attended the inauguration alongside Union Minister Shah, expressed his gratitude for the establishment of the academy.
Shah highlighted that the institution would not only produce disciplined officers but also instill in them the values of Lachit Barphukan, a true son of Assam.
“This academy will contribute significantly to the development of Assam’s law enforcement while preserving the rich heritage of the state,” Shah said.
