Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs who decided to leave the party had cited several reasons behind their move, indicating internal concerns within the organisation.
Shah’s remarks came during an election rally in West Bengal, coinciding with a major political development in New Delhi, where Raghav Chadha announced his decision to part ways with the Aam Aadmi Party and led a group of Rajya Sabha MPs to meet BJP National President Nitin Nabin at the party headquarters.
Raghav Chadha stated that more than two-thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs had decided to merge their parliamentary faction with the Bharatiya Janata Party by invoking constitutional provisions.
Seven MPs reportedly signed the merger document and submitted it to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, with Raghav Chadha and two others personally handing over the paperwork. He was accompanied by fellow MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal during the meeting.
The BJP president welcomed them at the party headquarters following the public announcement of their move.
Earlier, addressing a press conference alongside Mittal and Pathak, Raghav Chadha said that the decision to merge with the BJP was taken collectively by the required majority of AAP MPs in the Upper House. He attributed the move to the party drifting away from its foundational principles of honest politics.
Raghav Chadha also indicated that several colleagues, including Harbhajan Singh and Swati Maliwal, were among those parting ways with the party.
The development marks a significant political shift, with the BJP gaining strength in the Upper House as a result of the merger.
