Amit Shah Backs Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill; Recalls Resignation After CBI Summons

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday that the Opposition should not teach him lessons on morality. He recalled that when he was accused and the CBI sent him a summons, he resigned the very next day.

The Minister added that he did not take the oath for any constitutional post until all charges against him were dismissed.

Shah said this while pushing for the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025.

The Home Minister said that anyone neck deep in corruption will be arrested. They will go to jail and also have to resign.

The comments came in an official statement that shared details of a recent interview.

Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that no Minister, Chief Minister, or Prime Minister can run the government from jail.

“There is a provision in the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025 that if the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Minister of the Government of India or Minister of the State Government is arrested under any serious charge and is not granted bail within 30 days, then they will be relieved from their post,” he said.

He clarified that if this condition is not met, then they will be automatically removed from their post by law.

Shah said the Opposition should not oppose the tabling of any bill. He added that even constitutional amendments brought by an elected government must be placed before the House.

CBI Case and Resignation Recalled

The Home Minister asserted that it does not suit the main Opposition party to speak of vendetta. He cited the CBI summons issued to him and his decision to resign immediately.

“The case went on, and the judgment also came that I was completely innocent,” Shah said.

He further added that the court had called it a case of political vendetta, and he had no involvement.

Shah pointed out that he was not acquitted based on doubt, but the case against him was dismissed. He said that although he got bail on the 96th day, he still did not take the oath as Home Minister.

The Minister also did not accept any constitutional post until all charges were cleared.

The Home Minister stressed that morality does not depend on electoral victory or defeat. He expressed confidence that the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025 will pass, with many in the Opposition supporting it on moral grounds.
