Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday addressed a gathering in West Bengal’s Bankura district, where he urged members of the tribal community to treat the upcoming Assembly elections as a chance to respond to what he termed as disrespect towards President Droupadi Murmu. He directed criticism at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Highlighting the significance of the moment, Shah underlined that President Murmu represents the tribal community at the highest level of governance. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for facilitating her rise to the presidency, describing it as a landmark decision decades after Independence.
The Minister further claimed that opposition parties such as the Congress and TMC had not supported similar representation in the past. He suggested that they were uncomfortable with her appointment.
Aiming at Mamata Banerjee, Shah alleged that she frequently portrays herself as a victim during election periods. He remarked that such strategies, including symbolic gestures, would not succeed in influencing voters in the forthcoming polls.
Shah also accused the TMC of spreading misinformation about the BJP’s intentions. He said the party had claimed that a BJP-led government in West Bengal would be controlled from outside the state.
In response, Shah assured voters that the BJP would appoint a locally rooted leader who truly represents Bengal.
The Minister reiterated his party’s support for implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.
Shah argued that the policy would promote legal uniformity and address issues such as multiple marriages. He also referred to debates around ‘Love Jihad’.
The rally reflects the BJP’s continued efforts to consolidate support in tribal regions ahead of the elections.
As campaigning gains pace, political parties are increasingly focusing on identity politics and governance issues. They are also presenting competing visions for the state’s future.
