The musical play ‘Amar Balidan’ was staged at the Shri Ram Centre in Delhi’s Mandi House on September 22, commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
Organised under the aegis of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, the production left audiences deeply moved while portraying the life and sacrifice of the ninth Sikh Guru.

Written by Kamlesh Kumar with contributions from other members of the group and directed by theatre director Raj Upadhyay, the play presented Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s life while carefully observing Sikh religious traditions.
A key challenge in presenting historical and religious narratives is maintaining the sanctity of revered figures.
Sikh tradition does not permit actors to portray a Guru Sahib directly or wear the Guru’s attire.
The production therefore adopted a distinctive theatrical approach that kept Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji offstage while conveying his presence and dignity through narration, music and dramatic sequences.
A team of around 40 artistes brought the Mughal-era setting to life through powerful performances and dialogues.
A narrator and musical compositions guided the storyline, beginning with scenes depicting the Mughal forces and the persecution faced by Kashmiri Pandits.
The play highlighted Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s decision to stand against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s policies in defence of the Kashmiri Pandits. It portrayed the suffering endured by his close companions, Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das and Bhai Dayala Ji. Despite severe torture, they remained steadfast in their principles and faith.
The play portrayed Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s sacrifice at Chandni Chowk as a symbol of courage and religious freedom.
The team consulted religious experts to ensure historical accuracy and respect for Sikh traditions. Lighting and music added depth to the production.
