A video circulating extensively on social media platforms has reignited political tensions in West Bengal after it allegedly showed a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader disrupting an official voter list hearing.
The incident reportedly occurred in Pandua, a town in the Hooghly district, during proceedings conducted under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s electoral rolls.
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, shared the footage on X and Facebook.

In the clip, Sanjog Ghosh, identified as the Trinamool Congress’s Pandua block president, allegedly confronts and threatens the electoral officer overseeing the hearing. However, IANS has stated that it could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
Claims of Attempt to Obstruct Electoral Exercise
Reacting strongly, Adhikari accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of intentionally trying to obstruct the SIR process.
“The Trinamool Congress seems determined to disrupt the ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise in West Bengal. This is because the ruling party knows very well that a voters’ list with only genuine voters is enough to make them panic. Leaders of the ruling party at all levels are aware of this and are therefore trying to disrupt the exercise at any cost,” Adhikari said.
The BJP leader further alleged that the TMC functionary not only targeted the official on duty but also encouraged residents to interfere with the hearing, thereby disrupting the lawful process.
The BJP reported similar incidents from multiple hearing centres across the state since the claims and objections process began. The opposition alleged that local TMC activists orchestrated these disruptions in several areas, and in some cases, sitting legislators of the ruling party also participated.
While the allegations have intensified the political debate around electoral transparency in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress has not yet issued a formal statement responding to the viral video or the charges levelled by the BJP.
As the SIR exercise continues, the episode has added to the charged political climate in the state, with rival parties trading accusations over the conduct and credibility of the electoral process.
