Allahabad High Court Orders Jail Superintendent To Respond In 22-Year Life Sentence Case

The petition, presented by advocates Adarsh Shukla and Rajiv Shukla, argues that the brothers have been in jail for over two decades and should be released based on jail rules and Supreme Court decisions

ALLAHABAD HIGH COURT

Prayagraj, Aug 29: The Allahabad High Court has directed the Jail Superintendent of Central Jail Varanasi to file a reply within two weeks or appear in court on September 12. The order came in response to a habeas corpus petition seeking the release of two brothers, Shalu alias Manjeet Pandey and Little Pandey, who have been serving life sentences for the past 22 years.

Petitioners Demand Release

The petition, presented by advocates Adarsh Shukla and Rajiv Shukla, argues that the brothers have been in jail for over two decades and should be released based on jail rules and Supreme Court decisions. The advocates pointed out that despite this, the jail administration has not sent a recommendation for their release to the government.

Court’s Previous Instructions

Earlier, the court had sought a reply from the state government and the Jail Superintendent. The government’s lawyer requested more time, prompting the court to issue the current order, mandating a response or appearance by the Jail Superintendent.
