The Allahabad High Court has granted the Central Government additional time to file an affidavit on the establishment of an AIIMS in Prayagraj. The court, responding to the government’s request, set the next hearing for November 14.
This order came after advocate Sanjay Kumar Om, representing the Central Government, requested more time to respond. The division bench, led by Chief Justice Arun Bhasali and Justice Vikas Budhwar, issued the order during a PIL hearing filed by Sahaj Sarathi Foundation and others.
Previously, the state government submitted an affidavit stating it would fully cooperate if the Central Government decides to set up AIIMS in Prayagraj. The court had sought this statement after the petitioner’s advocate, Satyendra Chandra Tripathi, argued for the need for advanced healthcare facilities in Prayagraj, emphasizing the region’s rapid population growth.
Advocate Tripathi argued that Purvanchal has only one AIIMS despite its large population. He highlighted Prayagraj’s strong road and rail connectivity, adding that the city lacks a hospital with high-end medical facilities. The court asked both the central and state governments to assess the feasibility of establishing AIIMS in Prayagraj. While the state promptly filed its response, the central government requested two weeks to submit its affidavit.
