Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, officially joined India’s rail network on Saturday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38‑kilometre Bairabi–Sairang line.
With its completion, the state becomes the fourth in the Northeast after Guwahati, Agartala and Itanagar to gain direct rail connectivity.
PM Modi flagged off three new train services, the Sairang‑Delhi Rajdhani Express (weekly), the Kolkata‑Sairang Express (tri‑weekly) and the Guwahati‑Sairang Express (daily).
These will enhance transportation for people and goods within Mizoram and beyond.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government delivered the Bairabi–Sairang project at a cost of approximately ₹8,070 crore, successfully navigating rugged terrain that includes 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges.
Officials believe the railway will significantly improve access to education, medical facilities, and markets, while boosting tourism and trade.
Alongside the rail launch, PM Modi laid foundation stones for several key roads, including the Aizawl Bypass Road and routes connecting Thenzawl–Sialsuk and Khankawn–Rongura.
These are expected to cut travel times and open up economic opportunities for horticulture, agriculture and local businesses.
The project design is striking. It includes multiple major engineering features: 142 bridges, 55 major and 87 minor, and extensive tunnelling, with over 12.85 km in tunnel length.
Notable among its structures is Bridge No. 196, standing at 104 metres in height.
Construction has also incorporated cultural elements: murals reflecting Mizo heritage decorate many of the railway tunnels, adding both aesthetic and communal value.
To ensure holistic growth, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam.
The school aims to raise tribal enrolment, decrease dropout rates, and deliver quality education to Mizoram’s youth. Several other social infrastructure projects will support local communities in accessing better services and opportunities.
The launch of the Bairabi–Sairang railway and associated projects marks a pivotal moment in Mizoram’s development.
New roads, educational institutions, and advanced rail infrastructure are driving Mizoram’s socio-economic integration with the broader Northeast and the rest of India.
