PM Modi Announces ₹2 Lakh Aid For Families In Karnataka Ganesh Visarjan Tragedy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief following a horrific accident in Hassan district of Karnataka, where a truck ploughed into a Ganesh Visarjan procession, killing nine people and injuring several others.

Prime Minister Modi extended his condolences to the bereaved and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed that each deceased’s next of kin will receive ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Those injured will be granted ₹50,000 each.

Taking to X, the PMO posted, “The mishap in Hassan, Karnataka, is heart-rending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those who have been injured recover at the earliest.”

“An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM,” the post read.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pledged a further compensation of ₹5 lakh per deceased and assured free treatment for the injured.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and District In‑charge Minister Krishna Byre Gowda ordered an emergency response.

The district administration has been working through the night, with medical officers and officials closely coordinating relief efforts.

Doctors completed the post-mortems and legal formalities in hospitals during the night and released the bodies without waiting for daylight. Medical teams are actively supporting families with care and regular updates.

Incident Details

Police reports indicate the accident occurred at Mosale Hosahalli in Holenarasipura, Hasan district, during the Ganesh immersion procession.

The driver, identified as Bhuvanesh, allegedly lost control due to speeding and careless driving.

The truck first hit a motorcycle, then struck a divider before entering the procession area. Four people died on the spot; others succumbed to injuries in the hospital. A number of those killed were engineering students.

Angry onlookers dragged the driver, who had injured himself, from the vehicle and hospitalised him.

Thousands had gathered from Mosale Hosahalli, Hirehalli, and nearby villages for the procession. Students from local colleges joined the crowd, heightening the tragedy’s impact on their community.

Beyond the ex gratia payments, the state government has promised free medical care for all injured.

Minister Gowda has been overseeing treatment at hospitals and is in constant contact with affected families. The authorities immediately mobilised medical facilities in Hassan and Holenarasipura to manage the casualties.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reiterated condolences and called for prayer and collective support for those impacted.

“In this painful hour, our priority is care and comfort for the injured and their families,” he said.

Authorities also emphasised the need for stricter traffic safety enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future.
