Northern India began the New Year under thick fog, cold temperatures, and poor air quality.
Delhi, in particular, faced ‘very poor’ air conditions, with the Central Pollution Control Board reporting an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 372.
Low visibility caused flight disruptions at multiple airports, including Delhi, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati, complicating travel for passengers.
Early on Thursday, Air India alerted passengers on X regarding possible disruptions due to fog in parts of northern India, including Delhi.
Taking to X, the airline posted, “Weather forecasts for tomorrow morning indicate low visibility due to fog in parts of northern India, including Delhi, which may impact flight schedules across the network.”

Air India’s ‘FogCare’ initiative aims to support travellers by providing advanced alerts for flights most likely to be affected. Passengers can reschedule flights at no extra cost or receive a full refund.
The airline also advised allowing extra time for airport travel and checking the latest flight updates on its official website.
IndiGo also highlighted delays at airports in Ranchi and Bhubaneswar, urging passengers to stay updated on flight details via its website or app.
“Our teams are here to assist you and ensure support. We hope clearer skies will allow smoother operations soon,” the airline added.
IndiGo further warned of slower aircraft movement at Guwahati Airport, where departures and arrivals were affected.
Visibility in Guwahati dropped sharply due to fog and haze, leading to minor delays across the region.
SpiceJet informed travellers about adverse weather conditions affecting Ayodhya and Dharamshala airports.
Visibility Improves Gradually in Lucknow
Lucknow airport also recorded low visibility early on Thursday. Conditions were expected to improve gradually to around 1,200 metres. Visibility was likely to further enhance to nearly 2,000 metres by early afternoon, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Airlines continue to advise passengers to regularly check flight status and remain in contact with airline staff for updates.
Safety remains the priority as crews navigate low-visibility conditions across northern and eastern India.
The dense fog not only affected flight schedules but also worsened Delhi’s already poor environmental conditions, combining pollution with biting cold.
Passengers were encouraged to plan for longer travel times and consider alternative arrangements where possible.
