Ahmedabad Plane Crash: 31 Victims Identified Through DNA

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Authorities at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital have confirmed the identification of 31 victims of the tragic Air India plane crash through DNA testing.

Twelve of the bodies have already been handed over to their families, while efforts continue to identify the remaining victims, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

DNA matches confirm 31 victims, 12 bodies handed over

Dr Rajnish Patel, Additional Deputy Medical Superintendent (ADMS) at Civil Hospital, stated that DNA tests had confirmed the identities of 31 deceased individuals.

“We have successfully identified 31 victims. So far, we have handed over 12 bodies to their families. These include residents from Udaipur, Vadodara, Kheda, Kushinagar, and Ahmedabad,” Dr Patel told reporters.

Authorities have not yet matched the DNA of former CM Vijay Rupani. Dr Patel said testing is still ongoing.

“There has been no DNA match for Rupani so far. Once confirmed, we will immediately inform the concerned authorities and the family,” he said.

Dr Patel also confirmed that 13 individuals injured in the crash are receiving treatment at Civil Hospital.

“These patients are being treated for various trauma-related injuries and are stable,” he added.

Forensic teams work round the clock

Forensic teams from the state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) are leading the identification process.

The task has been challenging due to the severely burned and unrecognisable condition of many bodies.

“The identification work is intensive and emotional. Our teams are working around the clock to ensure families receive their loved ones’ remains with dignity,” an official from NFSU stated.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash kills over 260

The tragic accident took place on June 12, when a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport. The aircraft lost control and slammed into a densely populated area near Civil Hospital and BJ Medical College.

Over 260 people — including passengers and residents on the ground — lost their lives in the incident. A single passenger survived with injuries.

The crash caused widespread destruction, damaging nearby buildings, including medical hostels. Authorities evacuated hundreds of postgraduate doctors and their families from affected structures.

In response to the disaster, the government deployed 164 specialised teams, including medical professionals, trauma experts, and administrative officials.

These teams are stationed across the BJ Medical College, the Trauma Centre, and the postmortem units.

Officials continue to conduct relief and recovery operations with urgency and compassion, bringing closure to grieving families and restoring order to the affected area.
