Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted the potential of agrivoltaics to boost farmers’ incomes by combining solar power generation with agricultural activity ahead of the seventh AgriVoltaics World Conference in India.
Sharing an article by Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and Shivraj Singh Chouhan on social media platform X, PM Modi said the technology could provide farmers with an additional source of income, reduce energy costs and support crop productivity. He described agrivoltaics as an important avenue for advancing rural prosperity.

India is hosting the seventh AgriVoltaics World Conference from October 21 to 23 under the theme ‘Powering the Global South’.
In their article, Joshi and Chouhan explained that agrivoltaics, also known as AgriPV, allows farmers to generate clean electricity while continuing to cultivate crops on the same land.
The approach can diversify income sources and help farmers manage uncertainties associated with agriculture.
The Ministers noted that nearly 86 per cent of India’s farmers are small and marginal landholders, arguing that agrivoltaics could help them benefit from both agricultural production and the transition to clean energy.
Agrivoltaics can generate additional income through electricity sales, reduce dependence on diesel and purchased power, and protect crops from heat, drought, excessive sunlight and hail.
Wider adoption could create rural jobs in solar installation, maintenance and agricultural services.
The government is considering a dedicated provision for agrivoltaics in the next phase of PM-KUSUM, building on efforts to solarise irrigation.
Successful implementation would, however, require suitable crop selection, proper irrigation and nutrient management, and solar designs that allow sufficient sunlight.
The Ministers stressed coordination among government departments, states, research institutions and local bodies to expand adoption.
Agrivoltaics could boost rural livelihoods while advancing India’s renewable-energy goals.
