AGEL Sets A New Record For Water Conservation Versus Consumption

Adani Green Energy Limited, the largest solar energy developer in the world and the energy division of Adani portfolio companies has received the “Water Positive” certification from DNV, a reputable international organization.

This demonstrates that AGEL conserves more water than it consumes.

DNV assessed the water balance index qualitatively and quantitatively for AGEL sites with capacities of more than 200 MW in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh.

In the evaluation result, the water balance index was 1.12, which is positive.

To top it all off, AGEL has already surpassed its target of becoming net water neutral by FY2025.

The methodology, measurement techniques, estimation methods, assumptions, and uncertainties, as well as sample-based testing, are all covered in AGEL’s water-positive certification process.

DNV reviewed the water balance and quantification methodology on rainwater harvesting structures such as recharge pits and storage ponds. In addition, onsite verification of water credit structures was also carried out in Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

In water balance, there is a difference between water credit and water debit. Water credit is an estimated sum of groundwater recharge quantity of rainwater collected by the company which establishes estimated freshwater use through the specific sources.

The water debit reflects the amount of freshwater intake projected by AGEL’s solar and wind operating plants. Water is used for cleaning the panels of a solar power plant because it is important to optimize the performance of solar panels.

AGEL has achieved 99.5% less fresh water consumption per unit of generation in FY2023 against the statutory limit of 3.5 KL/MWh for thermal power.

Keeping in view the growing concern about the depletion of freshwater resources, AGEL is making efforts towards water management and for this, it is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 6 of the United Nations.

We will monitor freshwater consumption to reduce consumption, with the addition of third-party purchased surface water and robotic module cleaning systems as our primary source.
