Indian universities are severing academic ties with Turkish institutions over rising national security concerns. On Thursday, Jamia Millia Islamia suspended all Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with institutions affiliated with the Turkish government.
In a statement posted on X, Jamia said, “Due to national security considerations, any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and any institution affiliated with the Government of the Republic of Turkiye stands suspended with immediate effect, until further orders. Jamia Millia Islamia stands firmly with the Nation.”

This move follows Jawaharlal Nehru University’s decision to suspend its MoU with Inonu University, Turkey. The agreement, signed on 3 February, aimed to encourage research collaboration and student exchange. JNU cited similar reasons: “Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Turkiye stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation.”
MANUU, Hyderabad, Also Cuts Ties
Adding to the trend, the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in Hyderabad has also cancelled its MoU with the Yunus Emre Institute in Turkey. The university ordered the suspension with immediate effect.
These decisions come amid strained India-Turkey relations. Ankara’s vocal support for Pakistan and criticism of India’s counter-terror strikes have triggered growing domestic backlash. Calls for a boycott of Turkish goods and tourism are rising.
National security concerns heightened after defence officials confirmed Turkish drones had been found in a recent operation. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh said forensic analysis identified Turkish-made Songar drones, built by Asisguard.
Officials say these MoU suspensions reflect a larger strategy to reassess academic and institutional ties with nations acting against India’s interests.
