Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday directly intervened after an alleged attack on the convoy of West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, signalling growing concern at the Centre over political violence in the state.
HM Shah personally called Adhikari and sought a detailed account of the incident that occurred at Chandrakona in West Midnapore district.
During the nearly 15-minute conversation, Adhikari briefed Home Minister Amit Shah on what he described as a pre-planned assault on his convoy while he was returning to Kolkata after attending a political programme in Purulia.
Adhikari’s office also forwarded five video clips to the Union Home Ministry, which purportedly show attackers blocking the road, damaging vehicles, and the alleged absence of prompt police intervention.
Earlier in the day, the Home Ministry formally sought a report on the incident, reflecting the seriousness with which the Centre has taken the matter.
Sources said the videos indicate that a group of activists, allegedly affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress, blocked the Chandrakona Road Market crossing and attacked the convoy using bamboo sticks, even striking Adhikari’s bulletproof vehicle.
Centre Flags Bengal Lawlessness
Adhikari claimed that despite the violence continuing for a considerable time, local police failed to reach the spot.
After managing to leave the area, he went directly to the Chandrakona police outpost and staged a sit-in protest, underscoring his charge of administrative apathy.
The Leader of the Opposition announced that he would move the Calcutta High Court seeking judicial intervention and accountability.
He also declared a protest march at the site of the attack on January 13, escalating the political fallout from the incident.
The latest attack has revived memories of a similar episode in August 2025. At that time, individuals allegedly linked to the Trinamool Congress targeted Adhikari’s convoy in Cooch Behar.

Home Minister Amit Shah’s direct outreach has sharpened the political narrative, with the BJP asserting that the Centre will not remain a silent spectator to what it calls systematic intimidation of opposition voices.
The incident is expected to intensify Centre, state tensions and fuel a fresh round of political confrontation in Bengal.
