In a significant development for India’s energy sector, Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) and Adani Power Limited (APL) are set to bolster Maharashtra’s power supply through two major agreements. The deals were announced following a competitive bidding process initiated by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).
Under the new agreements, AGEL, India’s largest renewable energy company, will sign a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with MSEDCL to deliver 5 GW (5000 MW) of solar energy. This capacity will be sourced from the world’s largest renewable energy park currently under development in Khavda, Kutch district, Gujarat. This move aligns with Maharashtra’s commitment to enhancing its renewable energy mix and further solidifies AGEL’s role in advancing the state’s green energy initiatives.

In parallel, APL, which holds the title of India’s largest private thermal power generating company, will finalize a long-term power supply agreement (PSA) with MSEDCL. This agreement will see APL providing 1496 MW (net) of thermal power from a newly established 1600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project. This project aims to complement the state’s energy requirements with reliable and efficient thermal power.
The competitive bidding process, orchestrated by MSEDCL, included a combined procurement of 1600 MW thermal and 5000 MW solar power capacities. The tender conditions allowed APL to bid for both solar and thermal power capacities through its affiliated entities. Leveraging the competitive advantages of both AGEL and APL, the joint bid was successful, showcasing a strategic collaboration between the two companies to meet Maharashtra’s diverse energy needs.
This agreement marks a pivotal moment in Maharashtra’s energy landscape, reflecting the state’s proactive role in expanding its renewable energy capacity while ensuring a balanced energy mix. AGEL’s recent initiative, the wind-solar hybrid cluster in Jaisalmer, began supplying green energy to Mumbai in March 2023, contributing 37% to the city’s energy mix by June 2024.
As Maharashtra continues to lead in India’s solar energy sector, these agreements underscore a robust commitment to sustainable energy development and energy security for the state.
