Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday formally sought to establish the next government in Tamil Nadu. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single-largest force in the 234-member Assembly.
Vijay met Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan amid heightened political anticipation. Senior leaders, including ‘Bussy’ Anand, KA Sengottaiyan, Aadhav Arjuna, and Arun Raj, accompanied him during the meeting.
Sources confirmed that Vijay submitted a formal request to form the government. He assured the Governor that TVK would demonstrate majority support on the Assembly floor within the prescribed timeframe.
This engagement marks the first constitutional step towards government formation under his leadership.
TVK delivered a remarkable electoral debut by securing 108 seats. It, however, remains short of the 118-seat majority threshold.
Following the verdict, Vijay consulted newly elected legislators and senior party figures.
On Tuesday, MLAs unanimously elected him as legislative party leader, enabling this formal claim. Political manoeuvring has intensified across Chennai. The Indian National Congress has extended conditional backing.
Left parties and smaller regional groups continue internal deliberations. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has, however, initiated consultations after losing power after one term.
Observers state that alliance decisions in the coming days will determine the structure and durability of the next administration in the state.
