Acharya Mahant Satyendra Das, the chief priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, passed away at the age of 83 after suffering a brain stroke on February 2. He had been receiving treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow and succumbed to his condition on February 5.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his profound condolences, calling the loss an ‘irreparable loss to the spiritual world’. In his heartfelt statement, CM Adityanath said,

“The demise of Acharya Shri Satyendra Kumar Das Ji Maharaj, the supreme devotee of Lord Ram and the chief priest of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, Shri Ayodhya Dham, is extremely sad and an irreparable loss to the spiritual world.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, recognizing the significance of Acharya Satyendra Das’s role in the spiritual and cultural history of Ayodhya, paid a visit to SGPGI on February 4.

He came to personally check on the health of the revered priest before his passing.  His death is widely seen as the end of an era in the religious and historical landscape of Ayodhya, marking the passing of a key figure who had been an integral part of the temple’s legacy.

A Life Dedicated To Ram Janmabhoomi

Acharya Satyendra Das was far more than a priest; he was a key figure in the temple’s complex history, which has been at the center of India’s religious and political debates for decades. Throughout the years, he served as the temple’s chief priest during significant milestones, including the infamous Babri Masjid demolition on December 6, 1992.

Even during the most challenging times, Acharya Das remained steadfast in his commitment to the temple. After the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple’s formal consecration, he continued to serve as the chief priest, earning the respect and admiration of devotees and the broader religious community.

As the news of his passing spread, tributes flooded in from across the country, with political leaders, religious figures, and devotees expressing deep sorrow at the loss of a man who dedicated his life to the service of Ram Janmabhoomi. His unwavering faith and dedication left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

Acharya Satyendra Das’s death creates a void in the spiritual leadership of Ayodhya. It also leaves a lasting impact on the hearts of those who admired his commitment to his faith and his duties. His passing signifies the loss of a pivotal figure who shaped the temple’s journey, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
