Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee travelled to Sonarpur on Saturday to meet Sanju Karmakar, a party supporter who was reportedly subjected to violence after the West Bengal Assembly election results were announced on 4 May.
Earlier in the day, officials from the Criminal Investigation Department delivered a notice to Banerjee at his residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat area. Soon afterwards, he departed for Sonarpur.
Resistance to his visit began near Kamalgazi, where a group of women staged a demonstration and waved black flags at his convoy.
The opposition intensified after he arrived in Sonarpur, where a large crowd gathered and chanted slogans against him.
Attempting to continue his journey, Banerjee mounted a motorcycle belonging to a local Trinamool Congress worker. As he moved through the area, demonstrators advanced towards him.
According to reports, some protesters physically confronted the MP, while others threw eggs in his direction.
During the chaos, unidentified individuals allegedly ripped his shirt. They also reportedly threw stones, although none appeared to strike him.
To shield himself from further attacks, Banerjee put on a cricket helmet after being hit by eggs.
Following the incident, Banerjee accused individuals linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party of orchestrating the disturbance. He also questioned the lack of police presence at the scene and raised concerns about public safety.
The Trinamool Congress leader stated that he intends to seek legal recourse through the Calcutta High Court and formally brief Governor RN Ravi about the episode.
The visit represented Banerjee’s first major public engagement since the declaration of the Assembly election results.
Earlier on Saturday, Abhishek Banerjee visited Beliaghata in north Kolkata. He met another party worker who had reportedly suffered due to post-election unrest.
The confrontation in Sonarpur is likely to intensify the ongoing political debate in West Bengal.
Allegations of violence and concerns over law and order continue to fuel tensions between rival political parties in the state.
