A Single Election System: A Crucial Step For Indian Democracy, Says Sunil Bansal

In a significant address at a seminar in Noida, Sunil Bansal, the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), passionately advocated for the ‘One Nation, One Election’ system, calling it a crucial step for enhancing the democratic framework of India.

This proposal aims to synchronise national and state elections, improving governance, reducing election-related costs, and ensuring uninterrupted focus on national development.

Key Benefits Of ‘One Nation, One Election’

Bansal highlighted several key advantages of this reform. He argued that frequent elections often disrupt governance and slow down the country’s progress.

He pointed out that over the past 30 years, there has not been a single year without elections in some state.

The frequent and scattered nature of elections, Bansal claimed, hinders the implementation of important national and welfare schemes.

The introduction of ‘One Nation, One Election’ would minimise these disruptions, fostering a more stable and continuous development cycle.

Bansal also discussed the economic implications of this initiative.

With the cost of conducting elections estimated to exceed ₹1 lakh crore during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections alone, a consolidated electoral system could significantly reduce expenditure by 30-35%.

This would not only save valuable financial resources but could also stimulate economic growth by boosting the country’s GDP by up to 1.5%.

Historical Context & Government Discussions

Bansal stressed that the idea of a unified election system is not new.

From 1952 to 1967, India followed this model, with national and state elections held together.

The government has already set up a high-level committee to deliberate on this reform, gathering inputs from 62 political parties, 47 of which were supportive of the proposal.

The reform, according to Bansal, would not only reduce financial burdens but also improve the quality of governance.

With elections happening once every five years, politicians would be more accountable to the electorate.

Furthermore, Bansal suggested that the cost of electioneering, including the environmental impact of excessive campaigning, could be mitigated by conducting elections in one go.

Impact On Political Parties & Voter Engagement

Bansal acknowledged that political parties with dynastic leadership might face challenges under this system.

However, he emphasised that elections conducted at a national level would empower voters and enhance political transparency.

In turn, the frequency of elections would be reduced, benefiting citizens who would no longer need to take multiple breaks from work to participate in various elections.

Bansal concluded by highlighting that ‘One Nation, One Election’ would create more opportunities for uninterrupted governance and the timely completion of national projects.

By freeing up time and resources currently spent on electioneering, the government would be able to focus on development issues and work for the country’s long-term prosperity.

Notable Attendees At The Seminar

The seminar also saw participation from key figures, including former Union Minister Dr Mahesh Sharma, Member of Parliament Surendra Nagar, and several state and local politicians.

Representatives from various socio-political and civic organisations attended the event, showcasing widespread support for the initiative.

This strong turnout highlighted the growing consensus across diverse sectors, further emphasising the importance of the proposal.

This discussion marks a critical step towards understanding and potentially implementing the ‘One Nation, One Election’ system in India, a reform expected to redefine the country’s democratic processes and improve governance for years to come.
