‘A Positive Development For The Region’: PM Modi Backs Trump’s Israel–Hamas Peace Deal

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his support to the agreement reached between Israel and Hamas on the first phase of President Donald Trump’s peace initiative, describing it as a positive development for the region.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu. We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring respite to them and pave the way for lasting peace.”

PM Modi’s statement came a day after President Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the initial stage of his Gaza peace proposal, a move he called ‘historic and unprecedented’.

Trump revealed that under the arrangement, Hamas would release all hostages while Israel would reposition its troops along a mutually agreed line following negotiations in Egypt, which concluded with the signing of a deal based on his 20-point peace plan.

In a message shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump stated, “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan. This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.”

The US President also expressed his gratitude to mediating nations, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, for their role in facilitating the breakthrough, quoting a passage from the Bible: “BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!”

Washington Sources Hint at Early Progress

Earlier, reports from Washington suggested that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had quietly informed President Trump during a meeting that negotiators in Egypt were nearing a deal, prompting the President to share the news with select journalists.

Trump also hinted that he might travel to the Middle East as early as Saturday to follow up on the progress.

The peace accord marks a significant milestone in efforts to end the two-year-long conflict, which began on 7 October 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise assault on Israel, killing around 1,250 people and taking approximately 250 hostages.

In response, Israel carried out an extensive military campaign across Gaza that, according to local authorities, left about 67,000 people dead, most of them civilians.

The United Nations has warned of famine-like conditions in the enclave due to severe restrictions on humanitarian supplies during the hostilities.
