Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as ‘a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India’.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga. He was a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India. I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat and our association continued over the years.”
“He had a special affection for India, our culture, values and ancient wisdom. This was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India-Kenya ties. He particularly admired Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems of India, having witnessed their positive impact on his daughter’s health. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and to the people of Kenya in this hour of grief,” he further added.
Raila Odinga, 80, passed away earlier in the day after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest during his morning walk in Koothattukulam, Kerala, where he was undergoing Ayurvedic treatment.
Hospital sources said he collapsed suddenly during his morning walk. They rushed him to the facility, but doctors could not revive him. His body now lies at Deva Matha Hospital in Koothattukulam.
Odinga had arrived in Kerala six days earlier for therapy at the Ayurvedic centre and was accompanied by his daughter and close family members.
Local officials said he suffered a cardiac arrest around 6:30 AM and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
A veteran statesman and reformist, Raila Odinga was a defining figure in Kenyan politics for over four decades. He served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, a period marked by reconciliation efforts and the drafting of a new constitution following the 2007–08 post-election unrest.
Renowned for his fiery oratory and deep grassroots connection, Odinga played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s modern democratic framework. He was instrumental in the power-sharing agreement that restored stability after political turmoil, earning recognition as a leader committed to dialogue and reform.
As head of the Orange Democratic Movement, Odinga contested several presidential elections and remained a dominant figure in Kenya’s political landscape, balancing combative politics with a consistent call for unity and inclusion.
Officials from the Kenyan Embassy in New Delhi are coordinating with the Kerala government and hospital authorities to arrange the repatriation of his body.
Members of the Kenyan diaspora and local leaders in Kerala have expressed shock and sadness at his passing.
The Kenyan government will release a formal statement shortly.
