Prime Minister Narendra Modi set ambitious economic and energy targets for India on Saturday.
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, PM Modi said India should have 50 companies in the Fortune 500 list by 2047. He set a goal of placing an Indian bank among the world’s top five.
India, PM Modi said, should achieve 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The country should establish seven to eight additional semiconductor plants within the next one to two years.
Prime Minister Modi said India’s economic expansion must strengthen the global standing of Indian businesses. He announced plans to commission and operationalise five new nuclear reactors over the next six to seven years.
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s progress in Fast Breeder Nuclear Technology. He said the achievement marked an important step towards greater self-reliance in nuclear fuel.
PM Modi pointed to rapid expansion in piped gas and solar infrastructure.
Piped gas coverage has grown from 70 cities before 2014 to 700 cities. Household connections have increased from around 20-22 lakh to nearly 1.75 crore.
India’s solar capacity has surged from 2 GW in 2014 to 160 GW. Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, more than 50 lakh households have adopted solar energy.
The Prime Minister stressed the need to expand domestic manufacturing across complete value chains. He called for India to produce components, complex products and finished goods while developing capabilities from design to manufacturing.
Prime Minister Modi unveiled ‘Sapta Dhara’, or Seven Streams, as a framework for India’s next growth phase and the broader vision of Viksit Bharat.
