Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday shared photographs from the Red Fort and described this year’s Independence Day celebrations as a special and memorable occasion. He said the national flag should motivate every Indian to confront difficulties, preserve the country’s unity and place national interests above all else.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi raised the Tricolour at the Red Fort before delivering his Independence Day address to the nation.
The flag-hoisting ceremony featured a 21-gun salute, followed by a ceremonial flower shower from a helicopter.
At the beginning of his speech, the Prime Minister invoked ‘Vande Mataram’ and honoured the freedom fighters who made the ultimate sacrifice for India’s independence.
PM Modi drew attention to the significance of this year’s Independence Day as the nation marks 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’. He said the National Song resonated from the Red Fort during the celebrations, adding a historic dimension to the occasion.
The Prime Minister remembered Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters for their dedication and sacrifices during the struggle for independence.
PM Modi presented the idea of ‘Sapta Dhara’, meaning Seven Streams, during his address. He described the seven streams as important sources of strength that could help India accelerate economic growth and move closer to its ambition of becoming a developed country.
Linking the concept with the traditional idea of ‘Sapta Sindhu’, PM Modi said India requires a new flow of national strength and development to fulfil its aspirations.
The Prime Minister said the coming five to seven years would play a crucial role in determining India’s development trajectory.
PM Modi emphasised the need to channel the country’s young population towards nation-building by making full use of their talent, skills and potential.
