Jamia Hamdard, a government-aided deemed-to-be university, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with enthusiasm, patriotic fervour and national pride at the Hamdard Convention Centre in New Delhi.
On the occasion, Prof (Dr) Asgar Ali, Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, unfurled the National Flag at 9:30 AM on the main lawns of the Hamdard Convention Centre, followed by the national anthem.
The ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering, including Col Tahir Mustafa, Registrar; SS Akhtar, Controller of Examinations; DSW; Deans of Schools; Director (CDOE); Chief Proctor; Heads of Departments; Deputy Registrar; Provosts; NSS Convenor Lt (Dr) Mohd Ashif Khan; Executive Engineer (Officiating); university officials; faculty members; staff; NCC cadets; NSS volunteers; and students.
Prof (Dr) Asgar Ali received the Guard of Honour presented by the 3rd and 4th Delhi Battalions of NCC cadets, including boys and girls, along with university security personnel.
As part of the Independence Day celebrations, Jamia Hamdard organised an Inter-University Elocution Competition at the Hakeem Abdul Hameed Auditorium on August 12, 2026.
More than 50 participants from the University of Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jamia Hamdard took part in the competition.
The participants shared their perspectives on the theme, ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat: How to Achieve the Goal’.
The competition provided students with a platform to express their views on the vision of a self-reliant India and discuss strategies to achieve the national goal.
The programme featured patriotic performances, including songs presented by the cultural team led by Prof Khursheed Ahmad Ansari, Cultural Coordinator, and Dr Kalpana Zutshi, President of Music Club SAAZ.
NCC cadets presented a short skit.
The Vice-Chancellor presented certificates of participation to the best performers in the cultural activities.
In addition, the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar felicitated the university’s security personnel in recognition of their dedicated services and duties.
Vice-Chancellor’s Address
In his keynote address, Prof (Dr) Asgar Ali paid tribute to the countless sacrifices made by freedom fighters who envisioned an independent India founded on the values of justice, equality and fraternity.
Prof (Dr) Asgar Ali emphasised that their courage and determination remind citizens that freedom is not merely a gift but a responsibility that must be upheld with dignity, commitment and purpose. He further extended his greetings to all stakeholders, faculty members, staff and students of Jamia Hamdard on the occasion.
Prof Ali further emphasised that citizens and members of the Jamia Hamdard family have a collective responsibility to contribute to India’s progress and development. He said education, innovation and compassion must serve as the pillars for building a stronger and more inclusive society.
Prof (Dr) Asgar Ali highlighted Jamia Hamdard’s continued commitment to excellence in education, research, innovation and service to humanity.
The celebrations concluded with the distribution of sweets among members of the Jamia Hamdard fraternity, marking a joyous and patriotic celebration of the 80th Independence Day.
