Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the Tricolour at the historic Red Fort in New Delhi on Saturday and addressed the nation as India celebrated its 80th Independence Day.
The flag unfurling was followed by a 21-gun salute and a ceremonial showering of flowers from a helicopter.
Beginning his address, PM Modi invoked ‘Vande Mataram’ and paid tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence. He further extended his Independence Day greetings to citizens and remembered Mahatma Gandhi and other national heroes who dedicated their lives to the freedom struggle.
The Prime Minister highlighted the special significance of this year’s celebrations, noting that ‘Vande Mataram’ was echoing from the Red Fort for the first time since Independence as the nation marks 150 years of the national song.
PM Modi expressed solidarity with people affected by floods in several parts of the country in recent days. He further offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured those affected that the entire nation stood with them.
Emphasising the importance of ambition and determination, PM Modi urged citizens to avoid limiting themselves to small goals. He said nations progress when they combine their capabilities with high aspirations and firm resolve, stressing that bigger dreams can accelerate the pace of development.
PM Modi reiterated India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, calling for collective efforts from its 140 crore citizens. He highlighted the role of Yuva Shakti in achieving this vision. His address marked his 13th consecutive Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.
This year’s celebrations focus on the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ and the contribution of India’s youth towards achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047.
