TAMIL NADU FISHERMEN

A total of 19 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were sent to Chennai in an Air India passenger flight from Sri Lanka’s Colombo. They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on 6 March for crossing the border.

The 19 fishermen included 9 from Mayiladuthurai, 4 from Pudukottai, and 6 from Karaikal in Puducherry state.

The families of the fishermen had requested the central and state governments to take necessary action to release the fishermen.

Following this, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin wrote a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. He requested him to take immediate action to release the fishermen.

Meanwhile, the Indian embassy officials in Sri Lanka subsequently held talks with the Sri Lankan government officials.

As per reports, the officials, however, kept the Tamil fishermen under their care. They conducted medical tests on all of them and took steps to transport the fishermen to India by air.

As the fishermen did not have passports, the officials issued emergency travel certificates to all of them.

The Indian embassy also arranged flight tickets for all the fishermen from Sri Lanka to Chennai.

After they arrived at the Chennai airport, the fishermen were welcomed. They were further sent to their hometowns in vehicles arranged by the Tamil Nadu government.
