In a major boost to India’s rail infrastructure, the Ministry of Railways has announced that 144 Vande Bharat train services are now operational across the broad-gauge electrified network.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the update in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, underscoring the government’s commitment to modernising passenger travel.
Indian Railways developed the Vande Bharat Express to deliver both speed and comfort.
The trains feature faster acceleration, the Kavach collision avoidance system, and fully sealed gangways for enhanced safety. Automatic plug doors, improved ride comfort, and modern interiors further elevate the passenger experience.
Travellers also enjoy mini pantries with hot cases, bottle coolers, deep freezers, and hot water boilers for improved onboard catering.
Ergonomic reclining seats, revolving in the executive class, mobile charging sockets at every seat, and special lavatories for Divyangjan passengers add to the convenience.
CCTV surveillance systems ensure security throughout the journey.
Growing Passenger Numbers
Since their launch, Vande Bharat trains have seen a surge in popularity. Between April 2024 and June 2025, more than 3.9 crore passengers travelled on these trains.
Passengers made approximately 3 crore journeys in FY 2024–25, and they recorded the remaining 0.93 crore in the first quarter of FY 2025–26.
The Vande Bharat network aims to ease congestion on high-demand rail corridors while offering better affordability and improved safety standards.
With semi-high-speed capability, these trains reduce travel times significantly on intercity routes, making them an attractive option for both business and leisure passengers.
The Kavach safety system, a key feature of the Vande Bharat fleet, represents Indian Railways’ focus on accident prevention. This indigenous technology ensures automatic braking to prevent collisions, enhancing operational safety.
Combined with advanced braking systems and state-of-the-art engineering, Vande Bharat trains set a new benchmark for safe rail travel in India.
The Vande Bharat Express stands as a symbol of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, showcasing the nation’s capability to design and manufacture world-class train sets.
By blending speed, technology, and passenger comfort, the project reflects India’s ambition to position itself as a global leader in modern rail solutions.
The Railways Ministry continues to expand the Vande Bharat network, with plans to introduce new routes and further enhance passenger facilities.
This expansion is expected to support regional connectivity, stimulate local economies, and offer sustainable transport alternatives. As demand for faster and more comfortable train travel rises, Vande Bharat is poised to play a central role in shaping the future of Indian railways.
