Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted India’s achievements in reducing tuberculosis (TB) incidence, calling it a result of “dedicated and innovative efforts.” He expressed optimism for a TB-free India, citing collective efforts as key to the mission.
“Commendable progress! The decline in TB incidence is an outcome of India’s dedicated and innovative efforts. Through a collective spirit, we will keep working towards a TB-free India,” PM Modi posted on X.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently recognized India’s 17.7% drop in TB cases from 2015 to 2023, over double the global decline of 8.3%. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda acknowledged this achievement, noting it reflects India’s “transformative approach” to TB care. He highlighted key government initiatives like the Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana, which provides nutritional support to TB patients, and the BPALM regimen, a treatment for multi-drug resistant TB.
Nadda also praised healthcare workers, noting their critical role in achieving this success.
India ranks among the top countries for TB treatment coverage, according to WHO. The country also saw a major rise in preventive therapy, with 12.2 lakh individuals receiving it in 2023, up from 10.2 lakh in 2022. India aims to eliminate TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global goal.
