Everything You Need To Know About The Vaya Vandana Yojana For Elderly Welfare

On April 28, 2025, the Delhi Government launched the Vaya Vandana Yojana, a comprehensive health pension scheme designed to offer free medical treatment to senior citizens aged 70 and above.

The scheme aims to alleviate financial burdens related to healthcare by covering medical expenses up to Rs 10 lakh, with equal contributions from both the central and Delhi governments.

Under this initiative, each eligible senior citizen will be entitled to free medical check-ups, medicines, and even emergency treatments at over 100 empanelled hospitals across the city.

The scheme is a significant step towards ensuring that elderly residents have access to quality healthcare without the worry of medical costs.

A Collaborative Effort For Elder Care

The Vaya Vandana Yojana is a joint venture between the central government and the Delhi state administration, with each contributing Rs 5 lakh towards the scheme.

Senior citizens with an Aadhaar card will be eligible for treatment under the programme, ensuring that the benefits reach the broadest possible demographic.

Additionally, beneficiaries will receive health cards containing details of their medical history, routine check-ups, and access to emergency services, further enhancing the scheme’s reach.

A Tribute To Elders In Society

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, during the launch, highlighted the importance of this initiative as more than just a welfare scheme.

“Seniors are the roots of our society, and it is their every need that becomes our topmost priority,” she stated, emphasising that the scheme is a tribute to the elders of society, not merely an obligation.

This philosophy, therefore, underpins the Delhi Government’s commitment to improving the lives of its senior citizens.

How The Scheme Works

The scheme supplements existing coverage by issuing a health card to each elderly person in a family, ensuring that all eligible family members are covered.

The scheme offers free healthcare services, including general medicine, consultations, and emergency treatment through Mandirs across Delhi.

The registration process began on the same day as the launch, with beneficiaries registering at designated district offices and other public centres.

The Delhi Government has also instructed local authorities to prepare a list of eligible citizens aged 70 and above, facilitating the automation of the registration process.

A Vision For The Future

The Vaya Vandana Yojana aims to improve the quality of life for elderly citizens in Delhi, marking a landmark initiative in their welfare.

By offering free medical treatment and a health card system, it ensures that senior citizens can access healthcare services when they need it the most.

The scheme is an expression of respect and care for the elderly, and it promises to make a significant difference in the lives of Delhi’s senior population.

Registration & Execution Of The Scheme

The State Health Agency (SHA) officials will execute the distribution of health cards and manage the registration process at various locations across Delhi.

Local district magistrates will oversee the centres, ensuring all eligible senior citizens register and receive the full benefits of the scheme.

This initiative marks a key milestone in Delhi’s efforts to provide comprehensive care to its elderly population, reinforcing the city’s commitment to social welfare and healthcare accessibility for all.
