The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has rejected social media claims suggesting that officials of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs contacted Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi to resolve the standoff near Nirvachan Sadan.
The PIB Fact Check unit labelled the posts misleading and advised people to depend on verified sources instead of circulating unconfirmed information. The agency also posted screenshots of the social media material linked to the claim.
The disputed posts emerged as Opposition MPs staged a protest against the Election Commission of India in New Delhi.
Rahul Gandhi led around 300 Opposition MPs from Parliament towards Nirvachan Sadan, seeking a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and other Election Commissioners.
Security personnel stopped the march before the leaders could reach the poll panel’s headquarters.
Rahul Gandhi later said the MPs wanted to meet the Election Commissioners but faced restrictions while approaching the office.
Following the security blockade, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and several other Opposition leaders held a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan near the ECI office.
Police detained several Opposition leaders and workers during the protest as tensions escalated in central Delhi.
The Opposition has demanded the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar while raising allegations concerning electoral roll revisions.
BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad condemned the demonstration and questioned the Opposition’s decision to stage a protest in a sensitive area.
He also criticised Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over his reported demand for fresh elections using ballot papers.
The PIB clarification came amid heightened political tensions surrounding the Opposition’s campaign against the Election Commission and its demands for changes in the electoral process.
