Cameron Green Ruled Out Of Australia’s Durban Test Against South Africa

Australia will begin their Test series against South Africa without Cameron Green after head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that the all-rounder will miss the opening match in Durban.

Green injured his abdomen while playing a hook shot during the third ODI against South Africa. He also missed Australia’s two-day warm-up game in Potchefstroom as he continued his rehabilitation.

McDonald said Green has made encouraging progress but still needs time before returning to competitive cricket.

“He’s progressing pretty well, all things considered. He’s still here for a reason, so there is some light at the end of the tunnel. It’ll just be a matter of going through the rehab,” McDonald said.

The coach added that Green faces a demanding rehabilitation period but could feature later in the series.

Australia Miss Key All-Rounder

Green’s absence creates a significant gap for Australia after he impressed with the bat. He scored a Test century against Bangladesh in Darwin and established himself at No 5 following changes to his batting position during last season’s Ashes.

He also topped Australia’s run charts during the ODI series against Bangladesh in August.

McDonald praised Green’s progress and said the injury should not affect the player’s confidence.

“We felt like that was it for Cam, in terms of breaking through. Now he’s got a rehab to go through, but he’s a quality player,” he said.

Green had also managed a shoulder problem during the ODI series, restricting his bowling workload. McDonald said Australia would avoid rushing him back as an all-rounder.

Beau Webster could provide Australia with a similar bowling option if required.

The three-Test series begins in Durban on October 9, followed by Tests in Gqeberha and Johannesburg. The series forms part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
