PIB Fact Check Exposes Deepfake Claims On PM Modi, India-US Trade Safeguards

PIB Fact Check exposes a deepfake on PM Modi, as ministries reaffirm farmer protections in the India-US interim trade pact.

PIB Fact Check Exposes Deepfake Claims On PM Modi, India-US Trade Safeguards

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has exposed an AI-generated deepfake video.

The video falsely depicts PM Modi discussing market access for United States farmers.

The fabricated clip claims such access would distract attention from an alleged ‘Epstein file’ controversy.

PIB has declared the video completely fake. It warned that the content aims to mislead the public and undermine confidence in India’s agricultural policy.

PIB said the video falsely shows PM Modi yielding to foreign pressure against Indian farmers.

The unit clarified that the clip uses manipulated visuals and audio generated through artificial intelligence.

It urged citizens to rely solely on verified government channels for information on trade and agriculture.

Official statements from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Agriculture have reinforced this position.

They confirmed that India and the United States finalised an interim trade agreement in February 2026.

The deal includes limited tariff reductions on selected American products.

Trade Deal Clarified

The government has stressed that the deal offers no market access to sensitive agricultural sectors.

The ministries stated that dairy products, major cereals, millets, fruits, and other critical crops remain fully protected.

They emphasised that PM Modi directed negotiators to prioritise the welfare of small and marginal farmers.

Officials reiterated that the agreement poses no threat from subsidised imports or unfair competition.

Government sources have also highlighted potential export advantages.

They said Indian producers could gain better US market access for rice, spices, and value-added foods.

These gains, they said, align with India’s long-term goal of expanding agricultural exports without compromising domestic stability.

Despite these assurances, several farmer organisations have expressed concern.

They fear that increased imports of products such as apples and soybean oil from the United States could exert downward pressure on domestic prices.

These groups have announced nationwide protest actions planned for February 12 to demand further clarity.

The controversy underscores how deepfake content can inflame sensitive policy debates.

By circulating misleading narratives, such material risks distort public understanding of complex trade negotiations.

Authorities urge vigilance, transparency, and informed debate as India reshapes trade ties with the United States.
