PIB Fact Check refutes viral claim of Hormuz closure affecting India’s fuel supply, assuring adequate reserves and alternative routes.

PIB Fact Check Debunks Viral Instagram Reel Falsely Claiming Hormuz Closure Will Disrupt India’s Fuel Supply

India’s official fact-verification unit, PIB Fact Check, has dismissed a widely circulated Instagram reel that falsely claimed India could face an immediate fuel crisis if Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz.

The misleading video alleged that a potential closure of the key shipping corridor would sharply disrupt India’s petroleum imports. It also urged citizens to refill fuel tanks quickly in anticipation of price spikes and supply shortages.

Authorities clarified that the claim is inaccurate and intended to generate unnecessary alarm.

Officials emphasised that India maintains adequate reserves of crude oil and refined petroleum products to manage temporary disruptions in international supply chains.

The advisory reassured citizens that the country’s energy system remains resilient and well-prepared to handle short-term geopolitical shocks in the Middle East.

Government officials highlighted that India sources crude oil from a diverse group of international suppliers.

Several shipments already reached Indian ports through maritime routes that do not pass through the Hormuz corridor.

These alternative supply channels help minimise risk during regional tensions.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has also established a 24-hour monitoring control room to track developments in global oil markets and shipping routes.

The facility allows authorities to respond swiftly to emerging challenges and maintain an uninterrupted supply.

Experts note that the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.

Nearly one-fifth of the global oil trade passes through the narrow waterway every day. Because of this strategic importance, misinformation linked to the route frequently spreads during periods of geopolitical strain.

The government has urged citizens to verify such claims through credible and official communication platforms before reacting.

Officials stressed that rumours circulating on social media can create panic buying and unnecessary market volatility.

The clarification aims to reinforce public confidence and prevent misinformation from influencing consumer behaviour.

Authorities reiterated that India’s fuel reserves and diversified import strategy remain strong enough to ensure a stable supply.
