The official PIB Fact Check unit has dismissed viral social media claims alleging active militant clashes in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in Indian Army casualties.
The agency categorically described the assertions as entirely fabricated.
Several pro-Pakistani accounts on X claimed that security forces engaged in fresh encounters in the border district.
The posts further alleged fatalities among Indian Army personnel. PIB Fact Check examined the claims and confirmed that no such incident occurred.

The fact-checking body released a video montage to counter the misinformation. The video displayed screenshots of nine similar posts that carried identical or closely aligned narratives.
Each screenshot bore a prominent ‘FAKE’ stamp, clearly indicating coordinated disinformation efforts.
Officials stated that no verified security incident took place in Poonch on February 12, 2026.
Authoritative sources confirmed that the situation in the region remained stable on that date.
PIB Fact Check urged the public to rely exclusively on official government communication channels for updates related to national security.
Poonch, located along the Line of Control (LoC), has historically witnessed cross-border tensions and intermittent ceasefire violations.
However, authorities emphasised that past incidents must not lend credibility to unverified contemporary claims.
They warned that malicious actors often exploit the district’s sensitive security profile to circulate misleading narratives.
The episode underscores the persistent challenge of digital propaganda targeting India’s internal security environment.
Coordinated online campaigns can amplify false information rapidly, particularly during periods of heightened regional sensitivity.
By publicly flagging the posts and tagging them as fabricated, PIB Fact Check sought to contain the spread of misinformation before it escalated public anxiety.
The intervention reflects a broader strategy to counter hostile narratives through swift and transparent clarification.
Officials reiterated that credible updates on security matters originate only from authorised defence and government agencies. They advised citizens and media platforms to verify information before dissemination to prevent inadvertent amplification of propaganda.
The development, however, highlights the critical role of institutional fact-checking in safeguarding public discourse and preserving confidence in verified security communications.
