The government’s fact-checking unit, PIB Fact Check, has dismissed viral claims suggesting a severe power crisis in India, stating that there is no coal shortage or grid failure in the country.
The clarification came after a widely circulated post on the social media platform X alleged record electricity demand of 277 GW amid rising summer temperatures, along with critical coal shortages and load-shedding in several states.
The post also raised concerns over sharp spikes in evening demand when solar power generation declines, hinting at possible stress on the national grid.
Officials, however, termed these claims misleading and aimed at creating unnecessary panic.

According to PIB Fact Check, the country’s power system remains stable and sufficiently supplied. It stated that it fully met the maximum peak demand of 229 GW recorded on 2 May 2026, with no shortage.
The government also clarified that coal availability at thermal power plants is adequate, with total stock currently at 53.702 million tonnes, sufficient to meet operational requirements.
Addressing concerns around grid stability, the fact-checking unit noted that power availability across the country is adequate and that operations are being managed as per established protocols. It added that existing frequency control defence mechanisms provide enough operational margin to ensure secure functioning of the grid, even during peak demand periods.
