PIB Fact Check Debunks Deepfake Video Targeting Indian Army Officer

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has warned that Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating a deepfake video falsely attributing statements to Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar, Western Command Chief of the Indian Army.

The manipulated clip claims that Lt Gen Katiyar acknowledged making payments to the Afghan Taliban to incite them against Pakistan. Official sources have firmly denied this assertion.

Through an official post on X, PIB Fact Check confirmed that the officer had made no such remarks. “Western Command Chief Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar has NOT given any such statement!” the agency clarified.

The bureau also shared a link to the authentic and unedited video on YouTube, urging citizens to verify information before sharing unverified content.

Warning Against AI-Manipulated Propaganda

The fact-checking body cautioned that AI-generated videos are intentionally creating confusion, spreading misinformation, and damaging India’s institutional credibility.

The agency emphasised that these malicious digital manipulations are part of coordinated propaganda efforts originating from outside the country.

PIB Fact Check has advised citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or misleading content via WhatsApp at +91 8799711259 or email at factcheck@pib.gov.in.

Officials reiterated that digital literacy and public awareness are key to countering misinformation campaigns. The PIB encouraged users to rely only on verified government channels for defence-related information. They also advised avoiding engagement with fake or misleading posts.

The prompt response from PIB Fact Check highlights India’s growing efforts to tackle deepfake threats. It also demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining information integrity in the digital sphere.
