PIB Fact Check Debunks Claims Of RBI Selling $12 Billion Worth Of Gold

PIB Fact Check has dismissed reports claiming the RBI sold $12 billion worth of gold, citing official data showing stable reserves.

PIB Refutes Reports Claiming RBI Sold Gold Reserves Worth $12 Billion

The government on Wednesday dismissed reports claiming that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had sold gold worth nearly $12 billion, stating that the information was inaccurate and not supported by official data.

The PIB Fact Check unit dismissed claims that the RBI had sold a significant portion of its gold reserves.

Citing RBI data, it stated that India’s gold holdings remain stable, with gold’s share in foreign exchange reserves rising from 13.92 per cent in September 2025 to 16.85 per cent by May 22, 2026.

The government issued the clarification after reports surfaced suggesting that the RBI may have sold a significant quantity of gold.

PIB further stated that such claims directly contradict the central bank’s official disclosures and publicly available reserve data.

The RBI regularly publishes details of its physical gold holdings through its Monthly Bulletin and reserve reports.

According to the latest available data, India’s physical gold reserves stood at approximately 880 metric tonnes as of April 24, 2026, showing little change from previous disclosures.

Official data shows the value of India’s gold reserves rose from $81.82 billion in May 2025 to nearly $120.24 billion by April 2026.

Gold’s share in the country’s reserve basket also increased steadily, while total foreign exchange reserves stood at about $698.49 billion.

The PIB urged the public to rely on official RBI communications and warned against sharing unverified reports that could create confusion about India’s financial position and reserve management.
